Dachshund Breeders in Colorado
We have been dachshund breeders in Colorado since 2006 when we bought our first miniature wirehaired dachshund "smooch", pictured here.
There is so much to say about the path that leads to what is now Vagabond/Red Ruby Dachshunds . It began with the premature birth of a tiny little girl who would reinvent the evolution of her momma’s life!
This is a story of singular Ripples with combined and powerful impact. The story of a road less traveled, no simple highway, the dark & the light, and empty cup to fill.
BANG!!! From the time she could walk and talk at 10 months old a precocious little girl mounted her relentless window shopping spree at every dog show in Colorado, the Midwest and even in far away places like “Bean town”, Mt. Olympus, and sunny FLA! Yep, she hit up every breed & every breeder alive …..and just imagine the frantic “mommy search” that ensued after completion of Golden Retriever judging, for this tiny little child on a BIG mission for a LITTLE dog just her size! It was quickly discovered that there is more than one way to use a flexi-leash!
Madeline looked at and loved on every breed as different as could be from Momma’s Goldens. When the pride of Golden Endeavors was soaring high, Maddie proudly announced that she too would be a blue blood champion dog breeder; but not of Goldens who knock her down, steal her cookies & gut her beany babies but instead one of “little hot dogs” with big ears, big mouths& beards….just her size! Oh so little did we know was yet to come!
More dog shows and Golden pups in the whelping box, with a stunned Momma pregnant again, sister Danielle soon joined the chaotic search for the little dog in the big dog suit.. Hmmmm, and oh how equally determined & persistent was the result of this repeat breeding!
With Danielle still in diapers, a puppy was born on the plains of the Dakotas. When asked by the breeder what she would name her new little friend, Madeline exclaimed spontaneously “Smooch the Pocket Pooch”!
We found Smoochy thru a Golden Friend who referred us to LK Dachshunds “the best temperaments for kids in the Mini Wirehaired variety”. That friend was absolutely right! And so was born another glaring & joyous dichotomy in the life of the Cammarata-Silverstein “herd”.
About our Foundation
Smoochy & her daughter, Red, are the quintessential little dogs in big dog suits. They rule a house full of Goldens; quickly announcing the entry of anyone, 2-legged of 4-legged alike…never missing a trick!
They are tough & rugged like their namesake “The Badger Dog”; but still sweet and cuddly just like their Golden counterparts. Only they make much more practical foot warmers in bed!
Smooch & Maddie became quite a team in the breed ring, easily earning their deserved champion status. However, the start was a challenge to overcome…. One of their first times in the ring, Smoochy simply put on the brakes! Maddie’s persistence won out, and soon Smooch broke into that effortless and magical trot we all expect & revere at Vagabond!
The Advent of Red Ruby
Knowing little about breeding Dachshunds, we decided to send Smoochy to LK for her first breeding. A lovely new LK boy, “Dino” was chosen as her mate….and so Redy was born…..wagging her tail upon her first greeting to the world! In all my years breeding dogs, I had never seen a pup wag it’s tail as a newborn. Instantly imprinted, the bond between Red & Nellie would never be broken.
It was not long before this stylin’ new duo would proudly follow in their sister’s and momma’s footsteps! Redy is now a Champion & Momma (and Sherri is plainly spent!). Maddie has added a few new “hot bloods” to her repertoire; riding Arabian and Wild Mustang horses in endurance rides & 4H shows….and Danielle & Redy now carry on the Vagabond legacy with their maiden litter, under the kennel prefix “Red Ruby”; named in honor of the Vampires & Werewolves of the Twilight series! Never mind all this excitement (as if it isn’t already quite enough); In the summer of 2009, the same in which she & Nel completed her championship, Redy and her Momma, Smooch earned their AKC Junior Earthdog titles as well… Rat dogs extroidinaire (Thanks Carmelo)!
